The Grand Wine Festival is a culmination of three separate yet integrated functions:

The Arizona Republic Blind Tasting – Conducted by Richard Ruelas of the Arizona Republic – This event is not open to the public, results are kept confidential and no winemaker or member of the AWGA is involved in the judging or tabulation of scores and the resulting awards.

  • Prior to the Awards Gala, AZCentral.com will feature judge’s favorite daily to bring more focus on Arizona Wines and great excitement for the Gala and Festival.
  • In 2015, over 225 wines were entered in the competition. We are projecting 275 entrees for this year’s judging.

The Arizona Republic Presents the Grand Wine Festival Awards, Reception, and Gala Dinner featuring awards presentations to the best wines in Arizona and a silent auction at CREATE in the Phoenix Science Center. These awards comprise the “Academy Awards” of Arizona wines and will receive widespread media attention. Reception begins at 6:00 p.m. and the Gala Dinner and Awards at 7:00 p.m.

  • In 2015, this event was a sell out at $125 per person. Over 200 people enjoyed an incredible meal created by four outstanding chefs from all over Arizona.
  • Awards are presented throughout the evening culminating in the award for the best wine / winemaker.

The Grand Tasting and Marketplace celebrates the best of Arizona’s four wine growing and wine producing regions. The festival offers wine tasting and sales by the glass, bottle, and case. Other programming includes music, demonstrations, wine seminars, a small selection of vendors, and a live auction. Located at the Lath Pavilion at Heritage Square, festival hours are 11:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. Advance single day admissions are $15 for a commemorative glass and 6 tasting tickets.

  • At the 2015 festival, 28 Arizona wineries participated. We anticipate over 30 for this year’s festival.
  • We are teaming up with Downtown Phoenix, Inc. The leading group promoting activities in the heart of Phoenix. They have a social media and email reach of over 200,000 people. They consistently produce events that attract over 3,000 people one day events.
  • We are projecting over 1,500 guests attending the festival as we are moving the event for the third time. We have tentatively secured this site for the next 5 years. Our 5-year goal is to attract 7,500 guests to the event in 2021.

February 18th, 2017

The Off the Vine festival is the AWGA’s signature event in Tucson/Oro Valley. The festival offers wine tasting and sales by the glass, bottle, and case. Located at the Historic Steam Ranch, festival hours are 11:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. Advance single day admissions are $15 for a commemorative glass and 6 tasting tickets.

  • This is the 5th annual festival, with all festivals hosted at Steam Pump Ranch.
  • In 2015, 21 Arizona wineries participated.
  • This festival consistently draws over 1,100 guests.
  • This year, the festival will move next door in a grassy area that can accommodate 1,500+ guests.
  • We have teamed up with Locals First Tucson, The Town of Oro Valley, and The Oro Valley Chamber of Commerce to help promote the event. The event is currently listed on the town’s website and will be featured in the winter Oro Valley Community Magazine.
  • We anticipate 1,500 guests this year and plan on growing this event to 3,000 over the next 3 to 4 years.

Wine Industry Background

The Arizona wine industry is among the fastest growing industries in the state, creating jobs and economic generation while preserving sustainable agriculture statewide.

Although wine has been produced in Arizona since the 1700’s by the Spanish missionaries and a small scale wine industry has been here since the early 1960s, modern viticulture in Arizona began in 1983 in Sonoita at the southern end of the state. There are now 100 licensed and bonded wineries throughout Arizona. Arizona wines have been highly regarded by Robert Parker, the Wine Spectator and have even been served numerous times at the White House. We have had Arizona wines poured at two separate prestigious James Beard House dinners.

Arizona’s high desert produces a climate similar to Mendoza, Argentina ‐ hot daytime temperatures cooling off at night, the perfect recipe for a happy grape. Most of Arizona’s vineyards are located in altitude between 4,200 and 5,200 feet in northern Arizona’s Verde Valley, in Sonoita and Elgin in southern Arizona, and in the greater Willcox region of Cochise County in southeastern Arizona. The Arizona Wine Growers Association is a 501‐c‐5 tax exempt nonprofit organization as a labor, agricultural, and horticultural organization. Labor unions, county fairs, and flower societies are examples of these types of groups. Labor union organizations were a primary benefactor of this organization type; dating to the 1800s. IRS, from a federal level, stipulates a federal requirement and duty of providing service to the members first. They have other requirements such as that benefits may not inure to a specific member but the rules for inurement vary among the three different types of organizations under this segment. They can make unlimited corporate, individual, or union contributions.
